A Community Unlike
Any Other

Emmaus Abbey Church is part of the American Orthodox Catholic Church — an evangelical, sacramental, and charismatic community in Knoxville. We believe the road to the future runs through the past.

If you've found it hard to fit in, this is the place you can call home. We draw from many Christian traditions — Baptist, Anglican, Catholic, Orthodox, Methodist — all united in pursuit of the Ancient Faith.

Named after the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35), we are a community where Christ walks alongside us.

Ancient Faith
for a New Era

We are convinced that the faith and practice of the early Church will engage our culture more effectively and provide a way forward in a time of profound transition and change.

"We are not here to conform the church to the world, but for the church to change the world."
— Dr. Travis, Pastor, Emmaus Abbey

Emmaus Abbey Church was first conceived in January 1999 at Victory Chapel, Fort Meade, Maryland. Pastor Travis, a former US Army Chaplain with 24 years of service, was moved by Luke 24:13–35 to build a church where outsiders find belonging — a church that is "delightfully uncommon."
